Bridges of Honour: Warkworth artist to unveil tribute to members of Canada's military to die in Afghanistan

CASTLETON -Castleton artist Les Pomeroy will unveil his tribute to the Highway of Heroes at Warkworth Legion this Remembrance Day. Les Pomeroy's Bridges of Honour was shown exclusively to Northumberland Today yesterday and will be unveiled at noon today. The artist worked for several months to complete the project honouring members of Canada's military who have fallen in Afghanistan.

Warkworth - The Warkworth Legion received a special surprise on Remembrance Day as one member was immortalized in a painting by local artist Les Pomeroy. Castleton resident Allan Wilson, who has been raising pigeons for 35 years, is well-known locally for releasing pigeons from the Little Lake Road overpass during repatriation ceremonies.

Warkworth - In both World War I and II, birds were used extensively for a number of operations, many flying over 240 miles to deliver messages. Despite being horribly injured, homing pigeon Cher Ami was awarded the French Croix de guerre for his heroic service in delivering 12 important messages in World War I.

Warkworth - The artistic talents of Les Pomeroy took centre stage in a fitting tribute to fallen soldiers with the unveiling of his newest painting,"Bridges of Honour". The event took place at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 380 following its Remembrance Day ceremony. Pomeroy's latest oil on canvas was inspired by several trips he made to the Highway of Heroes where citizens gather at overpasses whenever a convoy carrying the body of a soldier travels from CFB Trenton to Toronto.
